The April 27 and April 28, 2011 tornado outbreaks across the Southeast will go down in the books as one of the worst weather tragedies in U.S. history. 
The largest tornado outbreak and greatest one-day total for tornadoes in US history occurred during a one week historic super tornado outbreak. By dawn on April 28, at least 359 people had been killed in 6 states and 305 reported tornadoes swept through parts of the Southeast . Alabama was the hardest hit, with 162 confirmed dead as of Thursday morning. This is nearly double the previous record for a multi-day tornado outbreak of 155 tornadoes, set just two weeks previously during the April 14 - 16, 2011 outbreak.
Total insured losses from the tornadoes last week are expected to be more than $2 billion. The largest previous number of tornadoes on record in one event occurred from April 3-4, 1974, with 148 tornadoes.
Off The Scale. The latest preliminary numbers from Storm Prediction Center for April is 875. To put that in comparison we have roughly 800-900 tornadoes, nationwide - for the year! The running 3-year average, for comparison, is 185. 359 fatalities in April; the running 3-year average for tornado deaths is 6.
The deadly tornadoes and flooding that affected many parts of the South and Midwest in April, underscore the importance for property owners to be ready for a worst-case scenario. By having a tornado safety plan in place and knowing how to carry it out, a way of getting weather warning at all times, and spending your time during a warning to keep safe, chances are high that even if the worst occurs and you are hit by a tornado, you can come out as a survivor and not as a statistic.
